Introducing Tiny Tantrum
I was recently excited to discover we had won a Toppsta book giveaway to review. We were sent Tiny Tantrum by Caroline Crowe and Ella Okstad, published in 2017 by Little Tiger Press. This was an advance copy to review before it is released for public sale (due out 10th August 2017) so we felt very honoured!
I will start by saying on first look this book is stunning and so well made, all the materials are good quality and we were also privileged to be sent a hardback version, which was a bonus!
Little Tiny goes on a BIG journey
The story follows a little girl called Tiny Tantrum who, when she doesn’t get her way, screams “That’s not fair!” During such a tantrum a purple monster appears from her wardrobe and tells her to put on her coat or she will get a cold bottom! Tiny goes through various toddler situations, which result in a tantrum and each time a new monster pops up to show her an easier path to settle herself. Tiny has such fun with all the monsters, they are so friendly and cuddly when they look after her, you cannot help but be enamoured by them. Eventually, Tiny learns to deal with her temper better and even tells her monster friends to get to sleep at night when they misbehave. Caroline Crowe has given us a lovely rounded out story for Tiny as she goes on her journey and learns to deal with her temper.
I have to say the illustrator of this story Ella Okstad has done a tremendous job of Tiny and her monsters. The colour palette she has used is perfect for a bedtime story, which is when I read this to the Bairn. The pastel pinks, purples and greens work to great effect on the monsters too and I like the design of all the characters. The style feels very bold and fresh in equal measures! The Bairn really loved all the pictures and the monsters in particular as they weren’t scary at all, super cuddly in fact, which he loves!
Bairns Best Bits
Of course he liked all the rhyme, which in my opinion is more than a match to anything written by Julia Donaldson herself, or indeed new boy on the block, Tom Fletcher.
‘So Tiny says,
“I’ll count to five, you’d better shake a leg,
The last one in and snuggled down’s
A STINKY, ROTTEN, EGG!” ‘
Bairn, like most toddlers loves any words such as stinky, rotten, bottom, bum, bottom wiggle, pants, snot etc. Caroline Crowe has provided parents here with a plethora of fun words that toddlers go mad for!
Always End on a Song
The end song is just the icing on the cake as Tiny and her monsters sing about flushing their tantrums down the loo – essential toilet humour for toddlers! I think we have here what I can predict will be a best-seller. The book has a great story with a nicely arranged lesson. Hopefully many toddlers will relate to Tiny and learn to shake their bums and melt away their flaring tempers. I guess it’s not always that easy but I now remind my Bairn daily of Tiny Tantrum with a tickle! I can only hope of appeasing his meltdowns before they gather any momentum!
